As Nene Warehouse Solutions continues to grow as a business, we recognise our duty to reduce the negative impact such growth can have on the environment. We are committed to channelling sustainable development throughout our organisation and the industry by investing in energy-efficient infrastructure and promoting eco-friendly processes.
Nene holds multiple SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) accreditations. Each independent audit has allowed us to reflect on and improve our operations while further establishing our environmental goals as the warehousing industry evolves.
In 2022, we assembled our first environmental committee to help drive change internally. The committee has allowed us to collect data on our carbon emissions, focus investments, fine-tune our green practices, and begin to raise awareness amongst our team, suppliers and customers.
Solar Panels
In September this year, Nene installed an impressive 134 solar panels at our head office in Northamptonshire. The installation will reduce our carbon footprint and gives us a clean renewable energy source.
Overall, solar power offers the best alternative to fossil fuels – assuming the sun is with us for a while longer! Improved technology and production efficiency have led to a dramatic decrease in the costs of solar panelling over the last decade. Pair with the seemingly endless unpredictability of fuel prices and soaring electricity bills, solar power is looking like an attractive investment for the first time since its inception in the late 1950s.
Electric Vehicles & Charging Facilities
Being a national company, our project managers regularly find themselves on the road, meeting with clients and overseeing live projects. We wholeheartedly believe you cannot beat meeting face-to-face (we’re a bit old-fashioned in that respect!), but there is a pragmatic balance between customer demand for service and environmental issues that must be achieved.
In 2019, Nene began phasing out fuel-powered vehicles to mitigate some of the effects that accumulative company mileage can cause. To date, we have 15 electric cars within the company fleet and 10 Rolec EV charging points at our head office parking facility.
Responsible Storage
Nene has long promoted the circular economy approach to warehouse solutions. We provide asset management services for many of our clients; utilising market-leading software to help businesses take control of their investments and maximise the lifespan of their storage equipment by recycling and redistributing it across their estate.
We also offer a Rack Hire service to customers looking for temporary or seasonal warehousing. Used racking – from an accredited supplier – provides the performance and flexibility of new racking without the drain on resources and cost burdens associated with buying new.
Paperless Processes
Nene’s racking installations, inspections, design surveys, and health & safety audits are all conducted without a single sheet of paper – which is quite an achievement considering the hefty administrative demands associated with even the most minor task!
Of course, this method of working has other benefits too. Opting for software and tablets over paper allows our field engineers to make notes and dispatch updates to our team in real time. Creating a far more efficient process for all involved.

The Future
We have already received recognition for our efforts in sustainability, receiving nominations from the National Building & Construction Awards and Northampton Logistics Awards. But we still have a long way towards our target of net zero carbon emissions. Our committee holds a monthly meeting to review and track our progress, and we look forward to sharing our green journey with you!
