Drive-in Racking

Drive-In Racking is a high-density warehouse racking system that is stocked and picked by forklift trucks, stocking and picking pallets from the front on a first in, last out basis (FILO).
Perfect for cold stores and product storage in large quantities such as cash and carry items and paper, the Drive-In systems optimise the space available for these larger stock holdings and pallets, making them cost effective too.

Space optimisation

Key to any business and warehouse is optimising the space available to be able to store and dispatch as much as possible, whilst keeping organisation and productivity at the highest standard. Dependant on your business needs, there are various ways of doing this and the Nene Design team determines the best solution for customers based on those needs.

Drive-In Racking is one such solution based on the fact that warehouse space can be utilised and maximised both horizontally and vertically – by as much as 85% in some cases. The racking is loaded from back to front, driving each pallet in to fill up the space with the last one loaded becoming the first one to be picked when the time comes. By storing and picking via forklifts only, space is freed up from eliminating operating aisles and additional picking operatives, giving added flexibility to what could have otherwise been, a fairly bulky operation.

What and how much can be stored?

Drive-In Racking is a high-density storage solution for products that need little to no stock rotation such as paper or dry food goods.

Cold stores particularly benefit from this format, as the temperature regulation is much easier to manage thanks to its clear-cut organisation, layout and lack of space wastage. Bulk items such as paper, which may vary on SKU but are largely the same shape and weight can be quickly stocked and picked within this system.

The amount of storage desired can be designed bespoke to the needs of the business. The system can store as many product types as there are load lanes, meaning big can still be bespoke.

Do you need specific equipment to use Drive-In Racking?

As with any warehouse fit out, all elements must be carefully considered, from fixings and fittings to pallets and trucks.

Drive-in racking can be adapted to fit most sizes of pallet, so as long as the Width of the pallet exceeds the dimension between the drive-in rails then the solution can be tailored to your exact requirements.

The materials used to construct the pallet can be timber, plastic or steel most typically, but crucially must be of adequate strength and structure to support the densely stored products and withstand forklift picking at a height, ideally constructed to BS EN 13695 standards.

Box and flat pallets are most commonly used, with reversable pallets also an option to add flexibility as they can take the same load whether on top or bottom deck. Wing pallets are not suitable and should not be used for Drive-In.

Pallet type is important to your warehouse design, health and safety, and productivity, all of which Nene can advise you on.

All of this has no bearing however, if you don’t have the correct forklift for the job – don’t assume that the forklift you already have will be fit for purpose.

The over-head guard (OHG) on the trucks causes height restriction issues and with the nature of Drive-In Racking utilising the height of the warehouse, OHGs will cause you issues from the start.

Smaller forklifts by design take lighter weight and smaller loads, and so are only suitable alternative if the goods stored are lighter and smaller.

Standard practice is to match the equipment to the racking, so customising your forklift or investing in specific trucks for Drive-In is the natural path to take. Reach trucks are typically used as they are built to work at height as required in this kind of racking set up. Your forklift provider will be able to advise on the best truck to fit your needs.

With your new trucks and racking it would be wise to implement additional training for the operatives using them, with increased precision and restriction to be taken into account for Drive-In. Nene provide forklift training programmes and can add this is in as a service to your new or updated racking set up.
